Shanthan was first arrested in June 2007 under the British Terrorism Act and released on conditional bail to stay with his sister in November 2007. He was rearrested by the British police in Swindon, Wiltshire in a pre-dawn raid on 6 May 2008 in less than a year for alleged fund-raising activities and procurement of war material.

52 year old Shanthan’s trial is expected to last more than a day and it will be seen as the first Terrorism trial outside Al Qaeda connected hearings.

The LTTE organisers in London have intimated that they will be holding the annual Hero’s Day celebrations in London on 27 (Thursday) November 2008. Leafleting and internet awareness campaign about the event has started already. The colourful leaflet is short of the venue for the event. For the past few years the organisers are encountering difficulties with the law enforcement authorities in London. In order to avoid any police interventions, they have decided to withhold the details of the venue.

Like last year this year too, the organisers are expected to give publicity about the venue few days before the event. It is expected this year’s Hero’s Day event in London will coincide with Shanthan’s Trial. - Sri Lanka Guardian
