Ultimate victory certain – Defence Secretary

(November 11, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Noting that the approach of the security forces has been correct, the Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa in an interview with Business Today said that “in analysis, preparation and execution of plans, we have scored many successes and ultimate victory is certainly within our grasp.”

A land route to Jaffna will be open very soon and the entire West coast will come under the control of the security forces dealing a heavy blow to terrorists, the Defence Secretary further said. The security forces “are also threatening other key points such as Paranthan, Kilinochchi and eventually Mullaitivu,” he added.

The ‘Zero Casualties to Civilians’ concept, introduced during the humanitarian mission to liberate the East, “has now evolved to become the first line in all military/operational briefs. This is an example to other armies in the world fighting a similar war”, the Defence Secretary told the Business Today. Speaking about IDPs he said that our track record has been exemplary. “Within one year, we resettled 90% of those who were displaced in the Eastern Province. The delay in resettling the other 10% is due to landmines.”

He paid a glowing tribute to the three forces and the police for their commitment and resolve. He attributed the success of the military operations to the high morale of the forces. “It is after all the soldier who wins the war for you,” he said.
