Friday's (6.3) protest rally in Vienna was organized by Austria-based “Sri Lankans against Terrorism”, who demanded the immediate and unconditional release of our Tamil brothers and sisters forcibly held by the LTTE as human shields.

Around Sri Lankan and Austrians 200 demonstrators carryied anti-LTTE banners and placards demanding the release of Tamil civilians held hostageby the LTTE.

Speaking to Sri Lanka Guardian Buro in Germany, Ranmal de Silva, the Convinor of the demonstration, said “the main objective of our demonstration was to request the Austrian Government to pressurize the LTTE to release Tamil civilians held against their wishes so that they too can live in peace and harmony with the rest of the Sri Lankan brethren within a united Sri Lanka”.

Following the demonstration, a memorandum addressed to the Hon. Dr. Michael Spindelegger, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Republic of Austria, was handed over to his representative Dr. Robert Bilek at the Austrian Foreign Ministry in Vienna by two representatives of Austria-based “Sri Lankans Against Terrorism”.

In the letter to the Foreign Minister of Austria, De Silva points out that two years ago, the present government was forced to embark on a humanitarian operation to liberate the civilians from the iron grip of this dictatorship and to rid Sri Lanka from terrorism.

He further informs Dr. Michael Spindelegger that the government of Sri Lanka is taking all possible measures to prevent any civilian losses but that the treacherous acts of the LTTE continue to put civilian lives in danger.

Representing Austria-based Sri Lankans who are opposed to terrorism, the group urges the Austrian government through their Foreign Minister to exert pressure on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in order to ensure the immediate and unconditional release of the thousands of Tamil civilians held as human shields in Northern Sri Lanka in contravention of international and human rights laws.
