Cricket vs Terror: Do Tamil Tigers have a hand on it?

By Malin Abeyatunge

(March 04, Melbourne, Sri Lanka Guardian) There will condemnations pouring from whole wide world including the countries that have double standards (good and bad terrorists) on terrorism on this dastardly act on a good spirited Sri Lankan cricket team. According reports eight of our players were injured and 6 Pakistani policemen were killed. Let the nation prays for their speedy recovery. It appears that this has been committed by skilled gun men with meticulous planning.

Politically, Pakistan had and has a very good relationship and mutual understanding with the Sri Lankan Government. There was hardly any misunderstanding between these two countries on political, economic, defense or social or any other issues. There were many instances where Pakistan came to Sri Lanka’s rescue in terms of aids when our country was hit by Tsunami, arms and other logistic military help against LTTE terrorists whilst India refused Sri Lanka in supplying military needs. So, Pakistan government is out of the equation and so is India albeit India was somewhat perturbed over this mutual understanding between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. India will not do anything to harm their second religion cricket. It is the cordial relationship between Pakistan and Sri Lanka that made Sri Lankan cricket team agree to fill the vacuum created by abandoning Pakistan-India test series after 26/11 Mumbai attack.
The terrorist group that attacked the Sri Lanka cricket team is not yet known but one can speculate various scenarios.

It may be a local terrorist group to bring disrepute to the ruling Pakistani Government and isolate cricket from the other cricketing nations. It may be a work of Taliban militants to show its bitterness against the present Pakistan Government’s policy on Talibans. In the recent past, the local terrorist outfits and Talibans have been targeting public buildings, Government offices, five star hotels and market places but why pick the Sri Lankan team is the million dollar question. Sports have nothing to do with politics. But, I must reiterate the fact that it was LTTE Tamil Tigers along with the so called Amnesty International who brought politics and terrorism in to the Sports arena at the last world cup cricket finals in West Indies. I therefore will not rule out LTTE’s hand on this attack as LTTE is in the edge of facing a humiliating defeat by Sri Lankan armed forces. Lately, it was observed that some Tamil Nadu politicians who are very much leaned towards LTTE are working hard to save LTTE from defeat. I therefore will not be surprised that the attackers were mercenaries hired by some Tamil Nadu politicians worked hand in glove with LTTE cells which are spread around in every country including India.

Let me just start by saying that the whole of Pakistan, including myself and everyone I know here are so relieved to see that Sri Lankan cricketers are back in their country safe with their families. To see them with their families was a big relief, a bit emotional but nonetheless very satisfying. Now, that our guests are back in their country and in comfort of their homes with their families, we can mourn the death of our policemen who lost their lives guarding the lives of our favourite cricketers. Question everyone asking here is that who would think of targeting Sri Lankans in Pakistan? A question Pakistan has to find out in complete coordination with Sri Lankans. Would like to thank the Lankan Team for visiting Pakistan for some cricket games in times when most countries refused. Thank you once again.
