Time to tame the Regime - Karu

(March 18, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Govt. is fomenting lawlessness in the country, and purposely destroying the Democratic Institutions and freedom of the people because it is increasingly beginning to realize that if the rule of law and Democratic tenets are observed, it cannot give answers to the media, the people and the Opposition parties in respect of its false promises made at elections and its failures in totality in all spheres of its activities since its advent , said UNP M.P. and Deputy leader Desha Bandu Karu Jayasooriya at a Press briefing at the UNP media unit today ( 18 Mar)

It is common knowledge that the Govt. is deliberately resorting to dilatory tactics in the appointment of Constitutional Councils (CCs) under the 17th amendment to the Constitution . The UNP who brought forth these Councils during its tenure of Office did it unselfishly in the interests of the country to de- politicize Govt. Institutions . The Mahinda Rajapakse Govt., on the other hand is averse to its implementation because it is politicizing all the Govt. Institutions to the detriment of the country and the people who stand to suffer thereby. If the Elections Commission, the Police commission, the Public service Commission and all Govt. Institutions appointments are made under the CC, which is represented by all parties , the Govt. will be barred from making appointment of its unqualified and inefficient cronies and stooges to these high offices . As it is , now without the CCs, beginning with the Police Force ,all Govt. Institutions are manned by political lackeys who are there only to serve the Govt. politicians even in dereliction of their duties to the public . These Police Officers know that even if they don’t conduct a proper inquiry into a crime, even if they engage in the most sordid of activities ,as long as they bootlick the Govt. politicians they get all their selfish promotions and benefits .The Govt. cannot manipulate the elections too if the Elections Commission exists under the CCs. , he added.

Never in the history of Sri Lanka has there ever been such intimidation, threats and murders committed against the media . A number of Senior Journalists have fled the country while so many have been murdered in cold blood. Has the Govt. been able to make a breakthrough in any of these cases ? he asked. This also shows that the Govt. is only interested in continuing in power at the expense of the interests of the country, the people and the Democratic Institutions, he observed.

If you wish to restore a free, just, righteous society and a Govt. which respects laws and Democracy , it is only the UNP which can live up to those hopes and expectations, he concluded.

A nice article written in good English. It is scholars like the writer who use their inflamatory tongues to cause racial hatred in Sri Lanka. It would have been appreciated if the writer also considered writin about how the Tamils were duped by the Sinhals leaders from the State council. days up to now.
