(March 16, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The chief suspect arrested in connection with the kidnapping and gruesome killing of a six-year-old child in Trincomalee last week, was shot dead by police yesterday.

The suspect had been identified as 25-year-old Mervyn who is a senior member and an activist of the Tamil Makkal Vithuthalai Pulighal (TMVP) of Shinaneshathurei Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan .

He was killed in police gunfire when he had attempted to attack a policeman inside the police vehicle while he was being taken under escort to the place where the little child’s body was found.

According to police the suspect had tried to flee after attacking a policeman accompanying him.

According to preliminary investigations it had been revealed that he had planned and carried out the entire kidnapping drama. The child had been taken away in a three wheeler by this suspect. Police said the three wheeler used for the abduction had been taken into custody.

Police said five others had also been arrested in connection with the heartless killing of Warsha Jude Regi after the abductors failed to obtain the ransom they had demanded from the little child’s mother.

Among the arrested was another member of the political party and a computer technician.

Police said the chief suspect who was killed in the police shooting had worked as a security officer in a private firm. The arrested computer technician had received a licence for a private radio station and he had requested the help of the political party activist to start the radio station.

It had been revealed that they had abducted the child and demanded a ransom to find the money to begin the radio station. The victim a Grade-I student of St. Mary’s College in Trincomalee was kidnapped last Wednesday while waiting for her usual trishaw that takes her home from school.

The gang had later demanded a ransom from the child’s mother and father if the child was to be released unharmed. The child’s father is employed in Qatar.

Initially, the gang had demanded a ransom of Rs. 30 million but later the father of the child had been able to reduce the amount to one million rupees.

However, the child’s body was later found inside a fertiliser bag seen floating in the canal that winds its way near Sarada Lane on Friday. The little girl who was strangled had been blindfolded, her hands and feet tied with burn marks on her body.
