'Party stands for ceasefire'

(April 06, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has said that his party stands for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka, where security forces and LTTE are engaged in a last ditch battle.

Responding to queries on reports of the war in Sri Lanka nearing its end, Karunanidhi said, Such reports do emanate from a war zone and declined to further comment on it.

He, however, said the DMK stood for ceasefire and asked the Centre to press for the same. He also called for India's intervention to ensure devolution of powers to the Tamils in the island nation, saying it is the right time to do so.

The leader also warned against using the issue for political mileage in the coming elections. The party's election manifesto released on April two had also warned against the issue being used for electoral politics.
