"Even as President talks of controlling underworld crimes , Police crimes soar with impunity"

(August 14, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) A member of Parliament to the United National Party, Palitha Range Bandara speaking on the raging lawlessness in the country and the fast growing Police brutality blamed the Government for creating this unprecedented most ominous situation in the country , when addressing the media at the UNP media unit today (14- August) .

Even as the President talks of controlling the underworld , the crimes in the country are increasing due to his own Police force taking the law into their hands , he asserted. This is because of the politicization of the Police . The Police Officers enjoy political patronage . Therefore, they do not hesitate to commit any crime on the confidence that they will be protected by their ‘political bosses’ . These Police officers who do all the dirty work of these bosses have no time to perform their legitimate public duty for which they draw a salary. A case in point is the double murder of two innocent youths , both below thirty while in the custody of the Angulana Police. The OIC , I.P. Newton who is the alleged culprit is well known for his close connection with a high profile politician and ‘women’ in the beaches. The two youths had to suffer this fate because they had fooled one of these ‘women’ when they were at the Beach , he bemoaned.

Referring to the spate of Police brutality in the recent past , he went on to prove the impunity which these Police assaults and murders are committed . In the case of the assault on Nipuna, a student of the SLIIT campus where he was abducted and ruthlessly assaulted allegedly by SSP Vaas Gunawardena’s son and others of the Police Force , the SSP’s son has still not been arrested , he observed.

It is becoming apparent that the Govt. ‘s ability to control the police is weakening because the Police which was used by the Govt. to carry out its illegal activities , like the Frankenstein monster is now trying to devour the creator, he concluded.
