Dutagemunu is a Hindu Tamil- A bitter pill to swallow

(November 23, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) According to a well researched historical record tabulated about rulers of Lanka before the birth of Christ published in the Wikipedia, king Dutugemunu is claimed to be a Hindu (Saivaite) Tamil. The record confirm his real name as Suthahaman Abayan and he is the son of Kakka Vanna Thasan and the brother of Devanambiatissan.

If this revelation is upheld the Mahavamsa claim that he was a Sinhalese king of Lanka will be defeated. The historical battle between the two kings Suthahaman Abayan (Dutugemunu) and Ellaran must have been a war between two Tamil kings in Sri Lanka.

Perhaps it might be of interest for fellow readers - before they scrutinise the contents of this table - to know from where this table was lifted off and who the author is before one draws any academic conclusions regarding its accuracy and authenticity!!..

The author who produced this table goes by the name of Mr. E. Logeswaran..

Mr. Logeswaran recently produced a document titled - ''Presentation to hold a referendum for an independent Eelam'' - Revision 10

The document was apparently produced to be presented to a body calling themselves the Tamil National Council (TNC)

Mr. Logeswaran begins his document by claiming the 'Tamils have been living on the island long before 16,000 BC
(refer Sangam)' and that the ''Tamils are the indigenous people in Sri Lanka''.. Without any supporting evidence apart from the statement ''refer Sangam''..

For starters 'The Sangam Anthologies' are notoriously difficult to date.. and even the worlds most respected historians and linguistics wouldn't date its earliest material to later than 100 AD.. As a result to use this body of material to justify the existence of a defined cultural/linguistic identity called ''Tamil'' all the way down to 16000BC is farcical..

The entirety of the above titled document is based around flimsy, non-existent/debatable strands of historical data - often stretched to the point of being unsupportable - to justify the author's claim of historical antiquity. The Bias towards the narrow minded ethnic claims is startling.

What is rather ironic and rather hypocritical is that the ''Mahavamsa'' and its historical tradition is being assailed as chauvinist except when it could be quoted advantageously for the Separatist Tamil cause.

When an 18th century Tamil writer wanted to compile a ''chronicle'' of the history of the Jaffna peninsula it was to the Mahavamsa he turned to derive inspiration for the origin story. 'Vijaya' is his starting point as that of the Mahavamsa (Yalpana Vaipava Malai [YVM] - Britto's translation). So did the compiler of Mattakaappu Maniyam, (MM) the 'chronicle' of the East with same antiquity base its origin ('Makan' - Magha) story on the Mahavamsa.

The scientific interpretation of history of Sri Lanka has taken a bigger beating in recent times with almost every other person venturing into the field to give his/her personal interpretations of facts, events and myths and even engage in deceitful fabrications to satisfy his/her personal ego or in the pursuit of chauvinist ideas. Pseudo-historians have proliferated especially in the context of the ethnic debate trying to prove to the world who among the inhabitants came to settle in the island first.

The genesis of this frame of mind has much to do with the claim of ''homelands'' which has been advanced by a section of people in recent times.

Wikipedia is not a reliable source of this type of information. It can be edited by anyone and the truth can be replaced by a lie, which quite obviously has been done in this case.
It is also noted that the article has no known author on Sri Lanka Guardian, which has and is becoming more and more like the Tamil net everyday.

Long befor this writer was born, in the 1930s, Mr. G. G. Ponnambalam had decided to play the racist card to capture the full leadership of the Tamils from the Ramanathans and other Turbaned tamils who were not interested in race, but interested in Caste. G. G. Ponnambalam began bashing the Chronicle of the Sinhalese, twisting names like Kasyapa into Kasi-appan, and claiming that the Mahavamsa is false (and at the same time that it is true if interpreted as a Tamil history!!). The culmination was the race riots of 1939 in Nawalapitiya (see the newspaper report in the Hindu organ, 1. July 1939, discussed in detail by the Oxford historian Dr.Jane Russell in her book). These individuals are manufacturing race based history to create havoc. It is finally the Tamils themselves who suffer in the end. The Ponnambalam-Chelvanayagam racist politics calling for exclusive Tamil homelands led to the rise of Prabakaran and the decimation of the next generation (youth) of the Tamils. These individuals, and their "cyber LTTE cadre", headed by "Taprobane", have been mutilating the Wikipedia where almost all Sri lanka articles are full of false information in favor of Tamil Racism. As a Tamil, I detest this racism that has prevented our people from living in harmony with the Muslims and the Sinhalese.
