I will create a parliament accountable to people, says General

(December 29, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) My aim is to establish democracy and create a parliament that is accountable to the people, says common opposition candidate General Sarath Fonseka.

He was addressing a propaganda rally held in Digana, Kandy on Sunday to pledge support to him, where several political party representatives were present. “I once had a dream to win this war. When I was appointed the Army Commander, I made the most out of it. I promised the people of this country that I would not let this war prevail for another Army Commander.

“I fulfilled that task. I was ably assisted by the courageous soldiers. Their sacrifices helped win the war. “I was also assisted by the other armed forces, the police and the Civil Defence Force as well.

“Most of all, it was with the support of the people that we won the war. The people stood by us. Accordingly 100,000 joined the Army. Without them we would not have won the war.

“We are coming before you to seek a mandate to develop this country.

“Corruption is rampant in the country. The stench of corruption prevails in all areas. I have come forward to stop corruption.

“I am fully aware that when cleaning this garbage, my hands will also get dirtied. They are slinging mud at me already. I have take up the challenge to clean this dump of garbage. I will do it. After I become victorious in the 26th, I will launch my second operation to clean this garbage.

“There won't be political interference in the state sector. There won't be intimidation in the future. Journalists won't be assaulted or killed.

“Poverty has spread across the country. The number of poor people has increased significantly. I will take steps to uplift the livelihood of the people. I will increase the Samurdhi allowance to Rs. 500. Samurdhi official s have to been provided with their benefits and when I come to power, I will strengthen their posts,” the General said.
