It’s not government’s policy to restrain intellectuals: President

(December 15, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) President Mahinda Rajapaksa says it is not the government's policy to restrain and imprison intellectuals. The President made this statement at a function held at Temple Trees on Sunday evening, organised for vice chancellors, and lecturers of universities to meet with the President.

Addressing the gathering, the President noted that it was the government's intention to strengthen democracy and ensure everyone's right to express their views.

“We know how the terrorists pressurised Tamil intellectuals. How many professors, lecturers and chancellors of universities left the country. We are aware of how the terrorists suppressed intellectuals.

“I believe the intellectuals don't need to be educated on these matters to obtain an understanding of this situation. After several decades, the country is totally free and we need to strengthen democracy and through this, express our thoughts freely and live freely.

“They trust their knowledge and it is that freedom they are requesting.

“We have taken the preliminary steps towards this. We are pursuing a path that will ensure this freedom. I hope you will join forces to protect democracy in the country and the freedom of intellectuals,” the President said.
