Subarathi Programme takes a less political tone

- SLBC Watch

(January 05, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) As compared to previous days the Subarathi programme has a less political tone today. It was devoted to the explanation of the government successes in the North regarding development. There was no room however, for discussions on views critical of the government’s claims.

The absence of any direct reference to the forthcoming election is quite a remarkable achievement.

On 5th January at 7 AM in the prime time programme, G.A. Chandasiri, the governor for the Northern Province was interviewed on the programme by presenter Sudarmmika Wijeratne. He explained how development has been achieved in the North. He spoke of the “Uthuru Wansataya” programme. He explained the facilities provided for farmers in the North which have been provided in order to improve the agriculture and animal husbandry in the area.

He was also asked about improvements in the fishing industry. He said that a very happy situation has arisen regarding the fishing industry. He also talked about assistance given to improve small businesses by granting loans and other facilities such as sewing machines, boats, nets, tractors, seeds and the like. Discussions are underway to farm 2000 acres in some areas.

He also explained steps to improve tourism. He explained the benefits of opening roads, such as the A9. A direct result of the improved transport is the lowering of prices of commodities. Improved communication also helps in better education facilities.

He said, democracy is been improved in the North. According to G.A. Chandasiri, nobody is complaining about anything anymore.
