Gota’s murderous mindset

(June 14, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Did the BBC Hard Talk reveal the mindset of the Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse when he blew over his top saying ‘He (Gen Sarath Fonseka) can’t do that. He was the commander. That’s treason. We will hang him if he does that. I’m telling you. How can he betray the country? He is a liar.’

Gotabaya reflected extreme anger, provocation, murderous intent and uncontrolled authority when he made these comments. Combining all these together, he reflected that he is a dangerous man who lacks the sense needed to hold a position of high office of Defence Secretary delegated to him by his brother the President.

Such mindset is very dangerous indeed and could attributable to the much of the unexplained colossal murders and disappearance in Sri Lanka. Sixty two years of post independence democracy in Sri Lanka has progressively denigrated into a violent society when it is being run by the violent minded leaders.

The psyche of violence has reached the peak during this government, when the governors of the nation have embedded in unhindered violence that this not seeing an end even after the defeat of the LTTE.

Unfortunately, even President Mahinda Rajapakse gets so much comfort when he associates with the violent goons and it is not a hidden fact that this government is a cocktail of blood thirsty violent men. When the President went on the highly important state visit to India, he took with him the so-called politicians stained with blood and violent history. The pistol carrying Sajin Vass Gunawardene, leader of a paramilitary group Douglas Devananda and one time street fighter Rumbookawela were part of the cocktail of senior men whom accompanied the President to India. The notable absentees were Dr Mervin Silva, Karuna, Wimal Weerawanse etc.

The comments like Gota’s could have caused problems in responsible democracies. Heads would have rolled or government collapsed, but in the paradise of Sri Lanka these parasites will be well nurtured by the state. When the President gives so much backing to these goons, one can judge the unchecked powers of his family members in running the government. Nether the President could sack his brother Gota nor Gota will have any sense to resign from his position.

The media too in Sri Lanka has been subdued by the state backed violence that has ravaged the industry. With the current impermanent sense of fear prevailing, the government is jolly-riding and has become unaccountable to anyone. Even the National State Assembly will not debate the comments made by the Defence Secretary.

If such comments had been made by a senior Tamil against the government leaders consequence could have been very serious. Even if Pirabakaran or a senior LTTE’r had made comments like Gota, the government would have gone to town calling him a megalomaniac.

One wonders what is wrong with the people in Sri Lanka. They are proving themselves insensitive lots when a type of governance of the LTTE is getting rooted in the island.
