' Minister Douglas Devananda is a wanted person '

(October 21, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Justice Paramsothy submitting his report on the request of Chennai High Court Judge has stated that Douglas Devanada is a wanted person in the 1994 High Court judgement against him.

At the fourth day of the hearing, Justice Paramsothy has confirmed these details.

In 1986 in Soolaimedu Douglas Devananda was involved in internecine street gun battle and he was charged and produced before the Court for killing a civilian Thirunavukkarasu.

Douglas Devenanda absconded from further hearing and the Court issued a judgement against him in absentia as a wanted person in the case.

Following the furore in Chennai recently, when he visited India with the President Mahinda Rajapakse, he filed a case in the Chennai High Court to withdraw the judgement against him as a wanted person in the case. The case is currently being heard at the same High Court.

The United States refused to give visa to Douglas Devananda to attend the UN general assembly meeting held this month. In the previous years he had joined the entourage of the President to the UN.

According to news reports the paramilitary leader and the government Minister is a persona non grata in some of the European countries, including the United Kingdom.
