‘IGP should answer’

by Deshapriya Rajapksha

(January 06, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Recently a friend of mine was caught by a traffic policeman in a suburb of Colombo – the offence was blocking a main road by parking. The time was about 1.15 pm and there were only a very few vehicles on the road and there was enough room for three, four vehicles to move through.

When the driver asked the policeman whether it was a no parking area and said there was no "No-Parking" sign to be seen, IGP’s golaya asked him whether he can see a "Parking" sign (What a fool he is). There are no "Parking" signs, although there are "No Parking" signs.

I do not know whether IGP’s golayas are given a "Target" for a day to catch road users in some manner. This police officer was without any objection watching my friend parking the car and when he returned to the car in two minutes only he was approached.

They are using the people’s reluctance to waste time in courts, as a judge will surely punish the officer not the alleged offender.

What do you say Dr. Balasuriya?
