India denies reports on abduction of three Lankan fishermen

(March 29, New Delhi, Sri Lanka Guardian) India today denied reports that three Sri Lankan fishermen from Valvettithurai had been abducted by their Indian counterparts.

The Indian High Commission in Colombo in a statement said that the three fishermen instead had been arrested.

“The three Sri Lankan fishermen in question were found poaching in Indian waters. They were taken into custody by the Indian Navy and handed over to the law enforcement authorities”, a statement from the mission said.

They said in keeping with the practical arrangements in force between India and Sri Lanka, Indian authorities are taking steps to obtain their expeditious release from custody and to arrange for their early repatriation to Sri Lanka.
