White Flag case: President and his Brother witnesses at wedding of judge's daughter

Blatant violation of rule of natural justice

(March 04, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) President Mahinda Rajapaksa, his elder brother and the speaker of the parliament Chamal Rajapaksa will be the witnesses at the engagment ceremony of Justice Deepali Wijesundara's daughter on 7 March. The President says that he had no objection if the wedding takes place at Templetrees. The President has even offered the Presidential Palace for the ceremony but as another special function is scheduled on the day at the palace, Colombo's Cinnamon Grand hotel has been chosen as the venue. According to the source, the Defense Ministry will make all security arrangements for this private ceremony.

Justice Wijesundara is the presiding judge at the trial-at-bar that hears the White Flag case against former Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka who is now in prison. Legal professionals are of the opinion that the close friendship between High Court Judge Wijesundara, President Rajapaksa and his family members will be a crucial factor in deciding the outcome of the White Flag case.

Sri Lanka is accused by the international human rights groups of failing to take action against the real culprits of human rights violations. The international community is closely monitoring the judicial processes in Sri Lanka, particularly those against General Fonseka. The Commonwealth has meanwhile requested Sri Lankan authorities to allow legal monitors to be present when cases against General Fonseka are heard.
