EDITORIAL: GOOD-LUCK SANGA AND FRIENDS

Sanga and friends, you have done marvelously well up to now to bring the country great honour. Every single Lankan – in the North, South, East and West – here and in the diaspora will cheer you along every minute in this game - keenly watched by billions over the world. This certainly is one area you can legitimately prove the current hype Sri Lanka - the Miracle of Asia.

(April 02, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Little Sri Lanka has done it again – for the 3rd time. Considering they are the more recent of the major cricket nations to gain Test Status and to find themselves in the World Cup Cricket finals for the 3rd time is an achievement in itself. How one wishes the other main features of the country developed just as well – across the many divides that challenge the country’s present and future good. In the Sub-Continent those in Pakistan , Bangladesh , Nepal , Afghanistan (a new member to major Cricket) root for Sri Lanka . While, understandably, the 1.2 billion strong Indian nation will want their own team to win, there is no dispute they look at our lads with awe, admiration, friendship and goodwill.

In the area of a strong batting front-line, quickies and spinners Sri Lanka is second to none. In fielding, marring a few exceptions, we are right up there. If luck favours us with the toss and if in-form Dilshan and Tharanga – 2 of the 5 highest scorers in the tournament – take us close to 100 the likely contributions of Sanga, Mahela, Thilan should gain us the safe 350-360. Controlled aggression and the right temperament in this overwhelming atmosphere is what the team should concentrate on. If Malinga strikes early with his deadly sting and with able help from Mendis and Herath – and with Murali signing off with his popular presence in world class cricket with a charactertistic performance, Sanga’s men will realize the dream of 20 million in bringing the Cup back to Colombo.

Irrespective of which one of the two fine teams that takes the troply there is little doubt the game of Cricket is the ultimate and bigger winner. The hierarchy of the ICC and those of the three host countries - Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh - have done exceptionally well working diligently over years of hard toil, planning including unprecedented security threats and finally producing a series of sporting events of the finest order.
