"The Efforts taken by the Ministry of Land for sorting out the land problem in the North created due to war, is commendable"


(May 19, Jaffna, Sri Lanka Guardian)  Douglas Devananda, Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development at a meeting held at District Secretariat, Jaffna in declaring open the office of the Department of Land Use Policy Planning said that the efforts resorted to by the Ministry of Land for sorting out the Land problems cropped up in the North because of the war, was commendable.

Siripala Gamlath, Deputy Minister of Lands, participated at this ceremony as the Minister of Lands, Janaka Bandara Tennakoon was away from office on an urgent matter. Speaking further, the Minister said that the Ministry of Lands that was working on the “Bim Saviya” programme had tendered a cabinet paper for sorting out the problem of Land ownership cropped up in the North after the war. He also said that he was extremely happy to observe Siripala Gamlath getting the port folio of Deputy Minister of Lands.

The Deputy Minister of Lands speaking at the occasion said that the contribution extended by  Minister Douglas Devananda not only towards the Development of Jaffna District but also for the country as a whole was really commendable and  Devananda was the 01st Minister under who he served when he was elected to the Parliament first. He also said that he very well knew that Minister Devananda was an extremely efficient person catering to the needy of the society.


Speaking further, the Deputy Minister said that the war ravaged Jaffna District under the leadership of His Excellency the President, under the supervision of Basil Rajapakse and under the able guidance of  Douglas Devananda was fast tracking towards all round development and in concurrence, steps were being taken to hand over the lands back to their owners when once demining was over, he added.

Deputy Minister also said that in the President Mahinda Rajapakse’s endeavour to make Sri Lanka “the wonder of Asia” many programmes were being implemented to develop the cities of the Northern Province, especially Jaffna, in line with the other cities of the country. Through the office of the Department of Land Use Policy Planning opened that day, people could obtain quick solutions to their intricate land problems. Safeguarding of the land through correct management too would be a function affiliated to this office,  Gamlath added.

Speaking further Deputy Minister said that Land Use Planning Offices would be opened in all the districts of the Island and the office opened in Jaffna this day was the 20th . Through this office under the guidance of Minister Devananda, the landless in the district would be provided with lands, he added. A sum of Rs. 57.52 million would be paid as the 01st stage of compensation to owners of the 132 blocks of land taken over by the Government in Karainager area, said the Deputy Minister.

He also said that the President made a special commendation to Minister Devananda for making arrangements to participate 6,500 people from Jaffna, for the Mayday rally held in Colombo. “ Minister Devananda at present is not only a leader of the people of Jaffna but also a National Leader of our Country” added Gamlath.

“ Minister Devananda even at the risk of his life supported the President ,for establishment of peace in our country and I wish him all the best” said the Deputy Minister in concluding his speech.

Ashoka Peiris , Secretary to the Ministry of Lands; Shanthi Fernando, Director of the Department of Lands and Imelda Sukumar, Government Agent, Jaffna also participated at this meeting.
