Karu ready to accept challenge

(July 29, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Acting UNP leader Karu Jayasuriya said last night that he would accept any challenge to take the party forward if it was the wish of a majority of UNP members.

Jayasuriya said that a group of Reformists informed him yesterday morning that at a time when Sri Lanka was facing grave challenges, both locally and internationally, with corruption dominating all branches of government, it was of critical importance that the main Opposition emerged strong and free of division and intra-party conflict.

UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe appointed Jayasuriya as Acting Leader before he left for the centenary sessions of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

Wickremesinghe is due back in the middle of next week.

UNPers said last night that a senior party man from the Gampaha district, who was earlier in the Wickremesinghe camp was mooting Jayasuriya as the party’s new leader.
