Most HR violations complaints against police

(July 21, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The largest number of complaints have been received against the Police Department for violating human rights in 2009, Parliament was told today (July 21).

Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gnawardena said that of the 5454 complaints received that year, 2691 had been lodged against the police. He said so in response to a question raised by UNP Dayasiri Jayasekera.

The other government institutions against which complaints have been lodged include the Education Department (253), the armed forces (176), Pension Department (90) University Grants Commission and universities (83) and Public Administration Ministry (65.)

Between 2009 and June 2011, the number of complaints regarding human rights violations received by the Human Rights Commission numbered 11732.

Solutions were found to 2329 complaints while of the remaining some were referred to other institutions and some were withdrawn by the complainants or not pursued.

A total of 3319 were treated as not involving violations of fundamental rights.
