4 UPFA members resign to protest Chilaw shooting

( February 16, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Four UPFA members of Chilaw Urban Council have resigned to protest the death of a fisherman in a shooting by security forces personnel on a demonstration against the fuel price hike.

They have tendered their resignation letters to SLFP organizer in Chilaw, deputy minister Neomal Perera.

Another fisherman is in serious condition following the police and the military used teargas and water cannons, fired shots and baton-charged the protestors.

A police curfew was in force in Chilaw until 6.00 am today (Feb. 16).
