‘An Australian citizen cannot do politics here’

(April 09, 2012, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) How can an Australian citizen go crazy here? An Australian citizen cannot do politics here. An Australian citizen should remain in his country, said defence secretary, Mr. Nandasena Gotbhaya Rajapaksa, commenting on the disappearance of Frontline Socialist Party leader Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

The Lankacnews, reports that Australian high commissioner Robyn Modie has telephoned Mr. Rajapaksa and asked him to find the missing citizen of her country.

The defence secretary has responded by saying that there are no records of the arrival of an Australian citizen by the name Kumar Gunaratnam, and therefore it is not possible to find a person about whom there are no records.

When asked to furnish details about him, the high commissioner said she did not have such particulars, he said.

Anyhow, a police investigation is underway, said Mr. Rajapaksa, who is the US citizen.

Another thing is that when Gunaratnam’s wife toured Sri Lanka recently, defence authorities made certain inquires from her about him. At that time, she denied a person by that name having arrived here with her, and said that he was in Australia. Now, they are saying that Gunaratnam is missing, he added.
