CM Karuna urged PM Singh over act of Sri Lankan Navy

(March 08, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) Chief Minister in Tamil Nadu, M Karunanidhi on Saturday urged the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to convey Lankan government to ensure humanitarian treatment to fishermen even if they inadvertently stray into their waters.

In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, a copy of which was released to the press on Saturday, Karunanidhi, said, 'the frequent firing of Tamil fishermen by the Lankan Navy has created a sense of insecurity and unrest among the fishermen in Tamilnadu and are causing a lot of concern.

Even on Friday, a total of 62 Tamilnadu fishermen have been arrested by the Lankan Navy.It is necessary to contain their arbitrary activities'.

'The protests by the fishermen in Tamilnadu against the firing incidents are some times becoming unmanageable and creates law and order problems'.

Karunanidhi further said, 'as the situation is becoming alarming day by day and unprovoked attacks are taking place often, I request the Coast Guards and the Navy to be instructed to be more vigilant and carry out effective patrolling and surveillance at sea'.

'It is imperative that the Defence Ministry gives adequate attention to my suggestions and ensure the protection of the Indian Maritime Boundary, as well as the fishermen who operate in this area', the Chief Minister said.

'The concerns and sentiments of the State government may be conveyed to the Lankan government by the External Affairs Ministry with a request to ensure humanitarian treatment to the fishermen even if they have inadvertently strayed into their waters'.
