CAFFE files a Fundamental Rights Application in the Supreme Courts seeking to prevent use of arms by unauthorized persons

(May 06, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Shiral Lakthilaka, Attorney-at-Law and Executive committee member of CAFFE (Campaign for Free and Fair Elections) has filed a Fundamental Rights application in the Supreme Court yesterday (05th May) seeking to take steps to prevent use of arms by unauthorized persons.

Commissioner of Elections, Defense Secretary, Inspector General of Police, DIG Eastern Province, Leader of the TMVP and AG were made respondents in this case.
The petitioner files this application on behalf of CAFFE, because the candidates and voters of the eastern are afraid come forward in fear of reprisals by unlawful armed groups.

He further added in his petition that the CAFFE has received number of complaints on intimidation, abductions, extortions and killings particularly in the Batticaloa district and the eastern province. So far respondents have failed to investigate the incidents or to take necessary measures to ensure an election-conducive atmosphere in the Eastern Province.
Petitioner asks Supreme Court to direct the 1st to 3rd respondents to take steps to prevent use of arms by unauthorized persons and incident of intimidation and violence on the Election Day and prior to the elections.

Lilanthi De Silva, attorney-at-law, filed this case and will be supported on 08th May.
