“We share Ranil’s concern for the GSP+ issue while our utmost concern is for human rights” - Mano Ganesan

(May 09, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Leader of Opposition has come up with the patriotic move to take up the pending GSP plus issue with the government and European Union. While welcoming this stated concern of Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe we wish to explicitly state our utmost concern for improving the human rights conditions in this country. This is bringing an end to the incidents of enforced disappearances, extra legal killings, extortions and the culture of impunity. We require the state to account for the people gone missing in the last two years and bring the criminals to books before any finalization of GSP issue said Civil Monitoring Commission Convener Mano Ganesan MP in a statement issued today (May 09).

Ganesan said further in his statement.

The risk of losing the GSP plus concessions would certainly destroy the garment industry and the livelihood of large numbers of garment worker families. It certainly leads to a socio economic crisis. Garment exports with GSP plus duty concessions come up with certain strings. The subject of human rights tops the list of strings. Thanks to the bad human rights record of this government. It cannot blame anybody but itself for the present crisis. While expressing total support to the Leader of Opposition for his noble endeavor, we stick to our position of total improvement of human rights conditions. Right to life is more of important than the right to livelihood. There cannot be any short cut to the GSP plus duty concessions. The message is clear to the government. It is told to improve the conditions. We anticipate that Mr. Ranil Wickramasinhe’s move in turn would bring an end to the saga of human rights abuses and culture of impunity. His proposed discussions with the government in Colombo and the EU officials in Brussels should bring back the men and women gone missing in this country. Release the people detained in illegal detention centers. Provide accountability to all the extra legal killings. Bring the criminals to books. We in the Civil Monitoring Commission will be taking up this issue with the Leader of Opposition soon.
