Ruling UPFA in landslide victory




(August 24, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The ruling UPFA is set for a landslide victory at the polls for the North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils, with the party way ahead in all polling divisions of which results have been announced so far.

The UPFA has secured 368,116 votes -124,369 votes more than its closest rival, the main opposition UNP with 243,747 votes.

The leftist JVP is a distant third with 22,179 votes.

In Polonnaruwa in the NCP, the UPFA has collected 107,910 votes and secured six seats, followed by the UNP winning four seats by polling 63,265 and 7,381 for the JVP with no seats.

According to results announced so far, the UPFA has also won Anuradhapura in Medawachchiya, Mihintale, Anuradhapura West and Horowpothana seats.

The very first result announced was postal voting for Ratnapura district in Sabaragamuwa, in which the UPFA gained 4,213 votes, while the UNP and the JVP collected 1,810 and 290 votes respectively.

In Kegalle, too, the UPFA won in postal voting - with 6,943 votes.

The UNP has gained 2,690 votes and the JVP 394 votes.

In other results, the UPFA has also won in Ratnapura - in Kalawana, Balangoda, Nivitigala, Pelmadulla seats, and also in Kegalle, securing Kegalle and Aranayake seats.
