Deva takes steps to settle the grievances of the IDPs

(March 21, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Douglas Devananda, Minister of Social Services and Social Welfare and Chairman of Special Task Committee Northern Province, presently in Vavuniya is busy in visiting Welfare Camps where the displaced from Wanni are temporarily housed, to look into their grievances for providing with immediate solutions with the able assistance of top brass of the Security Forces and higher up relevant State Officials.

Accordingly, many problems were amicably settled at a discussion held on the last 16th with the officers in charge of the administration of Welfare Camp at the “Kathiragamer” relief village in Chettikulam and “Pambaimadu” Welfare Camp and higher officials of the Departments of Health, Education and Water Supply.

At this discussion where the Government Agent Vavuniya and District Deputy Planning Director, were present, it was decided to provide with the families of “Kathirgamar” Relief village with fire-wood for cooking purposes, paddy straws to thatch the roofs for protection against scorching sunlight, windows for better ventilation, educational and writing material for school going children and tools like mamotees, knives, axes for the families. It was also decided to open up in the village, an additional co-operative outlet, a clothing shop and another outlet for purchasing fish and vegetables at concessionary prices.

The Minister said that a Non-Governmental Organization had come forward to donate food items other than the relief food items like; rice, flour, sugar, lentils and vegetable oil. The Minister extended his sincere thanks for this benevolent gesture of theirs.

It was also decided to identify the missing persons and trace them for re-integration to the families, those over 60years of age were to be singled out from the Welfare Camps and let lead peaceful lives in a free environment, to be built later. The persons with disabilities were also to be identified and made to reside out side the Welfare Camps in a separate place.

It was further decided that the Government employees in Welfare Camps who are at State payroll to be employed in the Centers.
