I’m competing with a person who is 40 days old in politics: President Mahinda Rajapaksha

(December 23 Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) “I have been in politics for 40 years but now I am competing with an individual who is 40 days old in politics,” says President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing a meeting for SLFP party activists in the Kandy district today. “We always say that individuals cannot engage in politics for many years. I have engaged in politics for 40 years. Many people don’t know the individual who entered politics 30 days ago. When you look at it I am competing with an individual who is 40 days old in politics. He is contesting with an individual who has engaged in politics for 40 years. That is the winning ratio that I have. This percentage if needed stands at 40 days to 40 years.” said the President.

Commenting further President said “We had to face many obstacles. I can remember people coming up to me and saying at a similar meeting earlier to unite the country at a time the country was being divided following secret agreements. We were given this country at such a time. We rescued this country. In order to rescue this country we had to employ individuals who could carry out this massive task. As a result we employed that individual who has retired now. We took him and gave him a responsibility. As we hand over Ministries to Ministers and as Secretaries were appointed to Departments. We gave him a Department and the work was done. I can reveal the truth about these individuals I have their files with me. I will not put them out. I am not slinging mud. I have the copies of the court cases that were filed against these individuals in question. Now that is the truth. I don’t want to reveal the truth. The lifetime of the mud that is being thrown is very short.”

A memento was presented to the President by a group of residents in the Central Province.

Meanwhile a demonstration in support of President Mahinda Rajapaksa took place in the Kandy town today against the comments made by the common opposition candidate General Sarath Fonseka on the Defense Secretary.
