(January 14, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) “I understand the heartbeat of the poor,” said President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Addressing a public rally organised by the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) at the Campbell Park in Colombo last afternoon, the president said that Mahinda Chintanaya had been introduced with the objective of outlining the UPFA plan to develop the country.

“I came here knowing all this. I did not fall from a bed of flowers or from the sky. Hence I can say that I have an understanding of the people's grievances and problems.

“Be it the village or the urban towns, I still understand the heartbeat of the poor. I understand their problems, and that is why we are developing this country which is now free.

“We have introduced the Mahinda Chintanaya with the objective of outlining our plan to develop this country. I have fulfilled 90 to 94 per cent of the promises that were stated in the previous edition of the Mahinda Chantana manifesto.

“This time, we will make it not 94 per cent, but 100 per cent. If Mahinda cannot do it, he will say so. But if he can fulfull it, he will say that he can,” said the president.
