Army Corporal and wife remanded for assaulting District Judge

(May 23, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) An Army Corporal and his wife were today remanded until June 6 over the alleged assault on the Matara District Judge Saman Kumara and his wife on Sunday.

Chief Magistrate Udesh Ranatunga also ordered the Senior Superintendent of Police to arrest some 15 others - all of them army personnel involved in the incident and produce them in Courts.

The corporal's wife has got herself admitted to hospital claiming she was assaulted as well.

Earlier in the day lawyers in Matara held a protest. They condemned the attack and called the government to ensure the safety of the judges and also to take action agaisnt the persons involved in the attack.

The District Judge had tooted the horn as he had noticed a motorcycle rider had stopped his bike on the middle of the road and was speaking on his mobile.

The incident occured close to an army camp prompting other soldiers to join in the assault.
