Politicians and thug-gery!

– Thinakkural Editorial

(September 25, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Politicians have begun to realize the reality today. They have realized that the people have rightly identified the calibre of the politicians in the right perspectives and the thuggery that they indulge in.

Minister Alagaperuma told a public meeting that it will take a hundred years for politicians to erase that impression from the minds of the people.

In general, the people feel that politicians are not sensitive to injustice and foul play. They are not concerned about the opinion of the people about them. Politics which was considered an opportunity to serve the people has become a vocation to earn money, to get wealth. Corruption and fraud have become signs of political diplomacy.

That is the era in which we live. The Chief Justice has openly told that certain politicians are men of corruption. Former President Chandrika Kumaratunge once charged that men who are drug addicts and who earn wealth through drug deals enter Parliament.

It is no secret that there is blessing from the top hierarchy for politicians who indulge in corruption. Persons who are capable of employing thugs and unleashing violence on the people are the ones selected as candidates by political parties to seek elections. There are avenues for those rejected by the people at an election to enter Parliament.

Politicians who can boldly say that they are honest in public need not misunderstand us!
