Registration or census!

– The Sudar Oli Editorial

(September 25, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Tamils who expected a determination by the Supreme Court over the call by the police for all Tamils who have arrived in Colombo from the north to register themselves at the nearest police station are a disappointed lot.

The explanation forwarded to Court that the police registration was not a step taken by the police but a move initiated by the Citizens’ Committee with the support of the police for conducting a census was a shocking news to them.

The announcements made by the police calling for registration had no indication whatsoever that it was a census. There was no indication whatsoever that it was under auspices of the citizens committee. It was only in the Supreme Court that this revelation was made for the first time. But, one wonders whether this is the manner in which a census is collected.

Meanwhile, in the South, there is a consensus reached that the LTTE can be defeated militarily and that after its defeat, a solution of their choice can be thrust on the unwilling Tamils. It is believed that after a military defeat, the Tamils will have no option other than accepting what is offered to them.

None is an exception to this!
